Just wondering does anyone remember the St. Paul’s Socials - it almost seems like it was the pre-grove thing to do. They were brilliant. I always remember this one priest, Fr. Moore I think. He would always refuse me saying I was to small to be a 3rd year student but sure I wasn't, I was just a little thing - anyhow he would tell a few of us to sit around the side and let us in the back door a little while later. He was a lovely fella. They were always great nights.

I only went a couple of times and they never grabbed me at all. Didn't have the atmosphere of the Grove and as far as I remember you weren't allowed smoke in them?
Imagine if the Grove was on now you wouldn't be able to smoke in it.

Socials on which year(s)? I may be guilty as not charged, having ran a few of them. I apologize in advance, and deny all responsibility.

I suppose it was in the late 70s era as come the 80s it was Grove time. They were always a packed house when I went and being a young thing and finally free of the parents guard - sure I truly enjoyed them. You've no need to apologize to me as I've no complaints.

I remember them well and loved them. The age limit was younger than the Grove. My nephews who attend St. Paul's think it is funny that we once danced in their now cloakroom

Rolo they were socials held in St. Paul’s for the 3/4th year students I believe. Since St. Paul’s and Manor House were close partners back then we would easily get wind of an upcoming social. It does appear however that other local schools around attended the socials. They reminded me in a way of the Grove but like Sunshine said a much younger crowd. It was where I got my introduction to most of the songs later played at the Grove.
It was my head start so to speak! Can't believe that room is now a cloakroom...

I went late eighties and it was in the main hall, where the Grove was. It didn't attract a similar crowd and the music was very different. I think they fizzled out soon after I started going to the Grove. Very hazzy memories here sorry, SaintPauls78 how did you end up running them? You're not a former bouncer under cover are you??!!!

You know you could be correct; memory is so fuzzy now - 3rd year does sound correct though. I remember them in the summer and I think they were during the week. I left Manor House in 1983 - not personal at all. It is 9.16am here - should be working!!! This site is killing my work ethic altogether. I love coming out here and seeing all the notes of the past. It's great.

Hello eejit91
The only reason I asked about Manor House was 'cos my cousin left there 'bout '80 or '81.
Didn't know too many girls from Manor House during Grove years, used to knock around with a crowd from St.Mary's in Killester, probably around our own age though.( I left David's in '82 and most of the Mary's gang left either in '83 or '84.)

Rolo I went to two of the St. Davids Deb's Dances. I think 82 was the first and then the other perhaps 84. My sister in laws all went to St. Mary's - you might know a few of them. Who was your cos? ok if you don't want to mention names.

Teresa, who'd you go to the '82 Debs with ?. Can confirm that it was in the Gresham. Can't speak for '84 as I was a University Student by then ( woo hoo ).
My cousin was Mairead Brougham from St.Assams Park.
I've no real problem with the names thing,so if you want to expose your sisters in law fire away.

I went to the Deb's with - Pete White. Went out with him for a while back then. You know my sister in law actully went to Vergo Clemens and the younger one St Mary's long after your or my time. I bet I know Mairead to see. Name not ringing a bell.

Here we go,see it is a small world after all as the song goes.
Peter White lived across the road from me in Artane.
He's in Malahide now , his wife was in hospital same time as mine having our respective nine year olds in Sept. '96.
See him at U9 Football and Hurling matches on and off.His fella plays for Sylvester's, mine for Raheny.
My cousin married a lad from Newcastlewest in Limerick in 1986 and lives there now.
Ciaran was her brother ,same age as me,used to knock around with Ultan Green and John McDonnell ...... any closer.
God you must get up early .

That is gas. Yes don't tell him but he was my very first heart breaker - sad eh. You must also know Paul Duffy who was a lovely fella back then and also Sledge, actully seen Sledge on one of my visits home and had a beer with him and Deborah his girlfriend at the time. They were all very good times. A really nice bunch of lads. You probably know Paul Smith, well I went out with his brother Alan for quite a while - that was the second debs.
I also have a 9 year old boy, Darragh - not hard to know what we were all doing back then!!!!
The names Ultan Green and John McDonnell are really familiar to me. The memory goes after a couple of years being so far away from home. I used to pal with Fergul Greely and Eddie Bannon to name a few, all St Davids lads.
I do get up early - Darragh is in school at 8, he goes to a good old Catholic school here. I have a 4 year old Ronan - a complete divil.

Hi Teresa,
Haven't seen Paul Duffy for years, his sister Sandra was in our crew back then with her mates from St.Mary's.( Linda Smith,Jean Carroll )all from Donnycarney.
Here's a cracker though,my sister went out with Fergal Grealy's brother,Ronan for years.
Eddie Bannon's ( who is now a comedian on the circuit ) sister Bernadette was in my class in Primary School but I don't know either of the Smiths though.Where were they from ?
Andy St.Ledger was also in our year in David's but I've not seen him for ages either.
Oh yeah, must compliment you on the choice of name for your four year old.
Did you ever know Rayo White ?

I actually went out with Eddie for a while - he's such a nice guy. I knew he was going into the comedian field alright. A funny guy alright. I know a Rayo but don't remember his last name. There was also a Bill and Damian and Darragh. Last names not coming easily. Just blasts from the past.
The Smiths lived off the roundabout - bet you would know them to see.
Dare I ask your name?

Think you've got the right Rayo ok.
He was and still is mates with Bill and especially Damo if it's the same one.The Darragh fella's not been around for a while as far as I know.
I've the same name as your youngest as you might have guessed by now.

I bet that is all of them. Did you know Dervilla Taylor from the Malahide road? Fergul, Dervilla and I were good mates.
I did kind of think you were a Ronan also. Don't believe we knew each other though back then. Pleased to meet you Ronan. Hubby picked Darragh, I picked Ronan.
I better go and do a bit here or they will fire my ass... such luck.

ok Rolo as the story has it, I met my now husband in the Green Dolphin Raheny. Always admired him from a distance so was delighted when he asked me out. Anyway not long after that he told me he was going to the states, not a problem I thought, it's not like were serious. Two years later his visa came through - ummmm. So he went in the August and I went to visit him the following Christmas. The question was popped "Well do you want to or what" that is exactly how he said it... Not a question I took lightly - it was nerve racking as I knew this meant leaving home. I returned to Ireland and we got married the following September. I came out to the states for a few months after that and then returned to Ireland to wait for my visa - 18 months later I came for good. That was 14 years ago. It took me all but the last 2 years to stop being miserably home sick. He picked Ohio as that is where his sisters were.
Not a bad place! There you have it.

My two have their Hurley sticks and soccer balls - their soccer net in the back yard - the lot. Good Irish lads. They even have their own golf clubs...
The Buckeyes are the big hit here - don't care much for American Football - American Throw ball my husband calls it.
I am afraid they do play baseball - when in Rome, you know the story.

Hi eejit,
Swear this will be my last post of the " did you know " genre, but .....
Remember last week we were talking about the lads from David's and you mentioned that you did in fact know a Rayo and we were wondering if we were talking about the same person.
Well I can definitively confirm,in no uncertain terms, beyond all reasonable doubt, that we were. How do I know ? 'cos last night I was talking to his wife,Debbie ,small in stature,my age, dark hair and she mentioned that she met you at that Reunion night at the Cricket Club a couple of years ago.
( World starts getting smaller and smaller.)
Oh yeah, how do I know Debbie..................I'm married to her sister.

It is a small world - I have no doubt about that. Yes I do know Rayo and Debbie - a small lovely looking girl. Know them all from way back when - the grove/cricket days.
Small world? Listen to this!
When I first came to the US - the owner of the company I work for asked me out to his house to meet an Irish lad his daughter was going out with. Anyhow to cut it short - I went and met this lad Anthony, "where are you from say's I" - Killkenny came the answer - Irish Town. I have cousins there says me! The Irishs and He say's - Damian Irish - he's my best friend!!!!!! I knew then just how small the world was.....
Anyhow like you - last post I have a sh*t load of work to do and a timeline to do it.
Later!

Good to see this one doing the rounds again. I loved the Pauls Socials. I always remember that there were lots of songs played there that were also played at the Grove but there were definitely some other ones that never saw the light of day at the Grove (How Deep is your Love by the Bee Gees for example). Still loved those dances though!! (thanks for resurrecting the thread T!)

Loved the Paul's socials also Mel! The thrill involved when you heard one was going to be on.... We lived for them. I remember they played "Talk to your baby on the telephone long distance". We had a dance we would do to that. Like you said though they played lots of grove numbers. I don't think I would have ever seen the light of any Paul's dances if not for Fr. Moore who always let me in the back door. Hated being small for that very reason... Nobody believed my age and these days I don't even get carded ............
