Lenny it's funny that you say that - when a gang of us used to go to the Saint Paul’s socials we used to do that. We would spot a lad and then send a friend over to say "see her over there; well she wants to dance with you". It worked like a treat!!!! Glad to see it saved you some awkward moments...

i had a mate who from behind looked very much like a girl. he was allways being asked to dance by blokes, then hed turn around, the blokes would sheepishly grin and run away. was very funny.

[QUOTE=Lenny3fingers]
I remember during slow sets sending messages and signals to your mate/s and visa versa to signal whether you were on a winner or not. In other words you were gettin good vibrations and lettin them know to buzz off and leave you to it.

The very first time I went to the Grove, a girl came up to me and said that her friend wanted to dance with me. I went over and she was lovely looking Anyhow I managed to get my hand in under her top which was a first (I was very sheltered when young!). Later the same night I pulled another young one and got to 2nd base again I really looked forward to heading the following week.
Unfortunatley it rarely went like that !

hahahah - the first time i went to the groive that happened!! 2 girls in one night! i thought i was such a stud.
best time was when i was seeing one girl who could only go to the grove every second week, and another girl who went to the grove every other second week. they were never there together. hahahahaha

Got it in one Killian.
We've all said that it's a shocking pity that there's nowhere like The Grove for our kids to go when they reach 15 -16.
Having said that,if they saw the carry on of their supposedly mature parents at the Reunions, they'd run a mile.( I know my 12yo would be gone like a bullet.)

You're right lenny its almost the perfect moment except for, well the exceptional moments i guess , picture this and feel my pain.
we're standing in the corridor in between both entrances to the hall. myself and my three good buds, as all young men do , we've been talking about the birds that are in that night and to my great pleasure my dream girl was there. if i told you that i liked this girl i'd be lying, i'd been f**king infatuated for a year and a half and had barely gotten the courage up to talk to her let alone ask her up. anyhooo the lads all knew this so you can imagine my surprise when the two lads who were leaning against the wall suddenly started staring over my shoulder with eyes that were getting wider and wilder by the milli-second. i felt a small tug on my left arm and i turned around. it was her..................................... . Dream Girl (name being withheld)
' can i ask you something' she said , i thought my heart was going to burst right through my ribcage. 'yes' i thought, its finally happening and in front of the lads too! this night couldn't get any better. then came the words that will be etched in my brain forever , " WILL YOU DANCE WITH MY FRIEND "
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just thinking about the slow sets today with all the banter on the site - I vividly remember when the slow set came feeling shy, mad really but it always felt strange to me standing there waiting to be picked out of the crowd..... ..... needless to say I was now and then but I hated that feeling!

It was just as bad from the blokes point of view, fear of asking the girl you fancied to dance and being told "no thanks" (polite I suppose, but it didnt do a lot for the self esteem). And I could never understand some of the guys moving on to the girl's mates if she said no. I would just split the scene as quickly as possible. Also, I always wondered, in that scenario, what the 6th choice girl would think if the bloke was refused by everyone else in her group - not exactly flattering for the poor girl to be last to be chosen..

Speaking as a bloke, it was kind of nerve racking as you were expected to go up and ask her to 'dance' while she was sitting there with her mates. The darkness of the hall made this more appealing than many other places but it was still intimidating. I guess asking her friend to dance may have been a strange way for the male to make light of the previous refusal. I recall myself and someone else trying to get as many refusals as possible. Can't remember how many I got though (probably loads!)

Speaking as a girl....it was terrible waiting there to be asked up to dance by the guy you had your eye on all night.....only for him to ask up someone else (that you hated ) We would then run outside to the seats on the corridor and start eyeing up some new guys for the next slow-set....only for the same thing to happen all over again
But we never gave up trying......

Ah but Bluebell then the moment arrived when that fine thing comes up and says "do ya wanna dance or what" and the legs would go to jelly and then your in the midst of it all and wondering will he go for broke - will the kiss ever come..... and it does so you do that for a few weeks until you think "enough of that" Next.....

Never had the guts to ask a guy up to dance....it was bad enough having to ask a guy to your debs....I worried about who to ask for weeks but then HD came along just like a "knight in shining armour" and asked himself to my debs.....and the rest as they say is history.
