What a wonderful segue; from the Air Guitar circle to the Genecide circle.

Our twitchy 'all eyes on me' flailing super-hero has been replaced by the uncomfortably numb cross-legged sage. They both obey the common rule of 'no dancing allowed' but the attachment to the music has taken a subtle shift. Invisible instruments begone! Now it's all about the lyrics man.

The Grove flirted with Genesis, but like a girl on a first date, Cecil
would give out enough to keep you coming back, but not enough to make your night. The shame of Genesis is, of course, is that it's like making a curry. It begins with all the mysterious ingredients and many shy away from all those odd spices. Then it starts to evolve into what looks like a stew and the aroma calms. It finally gets too damn watered down, and when it finally gets glopped over the rice, you might as well just have opened a can and wung it into the microwave. So, to say one is/was a Genesis fan is misleading. One must identify era.

If your hair parted down your nose like a curtain, revealing a red-eyed
Emporer Palpatine with that "You could never understand what I understand" look - then you are/were Level1. You knew that Like it or not, that's what you got, you're under the soil, the soil, the soil, yes - deep in the soil.

If you wore cowboy boots and read at least one Eastern Philosophy tome by 1973, then you were still roaming about pissing your parents off at Level2. You wanted to know constantly where your country lies, and grumbled through breakfast saying I am what I eat. By the following year you were in the Grove, but Genesis hadn't made it in yet. You were completely convinced that if Jesus came to
Earth, Lamb Lies Down is the record he would choose to play. The range of emotions on those two disks could not be comprehended by your Mom or Dad, so clearly you could only play this stuff when they were not around.

Then the curry started going horribly wrong. After the musical chairs game ended, Genesis 45s started appearing, and that meant two things. 1. Songs got airtime on the radio and the Grove, and 2. the band was slowly headed for the great annihilator - TOTP. Your girlfriend would say how much she loved 'Ripples' and 'Your own special way', and would wreck your world by buying you a copy of 
Wind/Wuthering for Christmas. After you broke up in January, you were contemplating resigning from the "G" club, but you kept going to the Grove anyway. Genesis had now been relegated to the slow dance set. Right there, you had the problem in a nutshell; You were "dancing" to Genesis. That was a disturbance in the force.

By the time Hackett hoofed off to work with a dude with an even bigger drumkit than Collins, you knew the jig was up. I think the stake went through the heart with Follow You, Follow Me, but that's just my opinion. Thereafter, there were more Genesis "fans" than you could shake a drumstick at. The curry was DOA, you cringed when you saw the threesome on Telly. You turned to your Dad and said
'the next thing you know these morons will be selling beer commercials or doing frickin mowtown tunes".

I'm amused by young people (<30) identifying with Collins as just another Rod Stewart, Gabriel as a neat but quirky version of Bono, and Genesis as some 'old band from the 80s'. I guess I miss sitting in my living after the Grove at 2-3 AM; headphones on, eyes closed,
reciting those words that seemed to sum it up for me at the time. My father to the left of me, my mother to the right, like everyone else they're pointing, but nowhere feels quite right.

Who's writing that kinda stuff anymore.....

I always thought that the musical box would have been good in the Grove, but I don't think it would have been played by Cecil. Watcher of the skies would have been class!

Really liked your take on 'chamber of 32 doors', those lyrics used to travel through me head all the time (mostly when I was at school). they were great lyrics and I don't think anyone writes like that anymore !

Gabriel was in a class and a world all of his own, and I really believe sometimes the other member of Genesis did'nt know where he was coming from either. after 'lamb lies down on broadway' came A trick of the tail which I have to admit I really did like.Your right, When Steve Hackket left the Game was over, anything Genesis did after that was just realy dire.

as far as the Grove and Genesis are concerened I only ever heard 'ripples, follow you follow me.  'watcher of the skies' would of been really good to hear, but could you imagine the reaction Cecil would of got had he played the legendary suppers ready?

The Lamb lies down was a brilliant album, but still to this day I really dont know what the story of Rael was really about. I also loved Supertramp, but only ever heard 'dreamer' at the grove.

Sorry to say I haven't any notions as to the whereabouts of John or Robbie. The Last time I saw zero zero was at the Ivy Rooms, they had two new members, a second guitarist and a synth player.Around 85 they seem to drop out of the gig circuit. If you were hanging with them at that time I might know you to see (especially as you hanging round the Grove during the early eighties) I remember Robbie being so good natured and a great laugh, John just had a permenant grin on his face, Colm was bit more moody as I remember. but certainly they were all enthusastic about what they were doing musically.like you, I often wonder how things faired out for them,

Don't give up the search Rolo, maybe you should start your search in Donaghmede. I'm sure their out there somewhere, maybe they'll come across this website one day.

Enjoy reading your stuff! Absolutely delighted you share my love for Super Tramp - Crime of the Century is just fantastic and in fact I wondered if they ever played it at the Grove as I don't remember them doing so?.

PS: if you intend popping over to Dublin and have any notion of going to the reunion you might want to invest in a ticket or have someone pick you up one as they seem to be in big demand. Wish I had the opportunity to "pop over to Dublin" - lucky you.  

Gosh Russell what a great story and a fantastic memory... Wicklow, forest trekking, peppermint tea and a fire - the life!  Then to top it all off Super Tramp!

My husband absolutely shares your love for them. These days I have my two boys asking all the time for Dreamer but not before I say - hold on - I just want to hear this one "Crime of the Century".  I commend your choice of music. 

ps: Would I be correct in saying you just hit a milestone (ok I'll say it quietly - 40...) Hit the big 40 myself back in Feb, it hurt a little but not too much - as they say "life begins at 40"...

The Grove for me was a place I went to meet up with all my friends and as I remember it there were about 5 or 6 different groups that I would mingle within.  Great times, great music, great memories.

You are quite correct! I turned 40 just a couple of weeks ago and I have to agree that it hurt just a tad, but like you I'm quite warming to the idea now. There was a couple bottles Champagne on my birthday, a few laughs and sighs, and that was that, Time to move on! (although obviuosly my mind still is wandering in and out times gone by)

I promised myself a couple of years ago that I would go over to the Himlayas before I turned forty, and I just about made it as I am going to Nepal for a few weeks this Christmas, and  there I will have reached the middle of my life and be on top of the world !

It's so good that you and your Husband are still so into Super tramp, and that your two  boys are getting a healthy musical diet.( especially living in the states where Supertramp are so popular). I still hear people singing dreamer from time to time,sometimes Young streetwise kids who have never heard of supertramp but know and love that song ! ( talk about a timeless classic) I'm trying to get a copy their second album (indelibly stamped), there are two songs on it that album which you might remember ,'rosie had everything planned' and 'travelled'. but I can't seem to get it for love nor money.!

Listen,if you were anything like me and lived for the Grove,Saturday,Sunday and Wednesday in the Summer, I reckon you'd love the Reunions.

There's quite a number of people in the 38 - 42 age group going ( there's also a lot of younger ex Grovers too ) but you just spend the whole night with a smile on your face as song after song that you loved 20+ years ago appears.( Nothing to do with drink,swear.)

It's also fun spotting people you'd known casually back then and renewing acquaintainces.

Anyway, reckon we could have been nodding acquaintances back then as I was quite friendly with John ( more so than Robbie ) and introducd him to Mary,the girl of his dreams who he later married.

Betcha we could dredge up some familiar names if we thought about it long enough.

Oh yeah,what's with the Supertramp thing ? never could get my head around that one.

Russell, Most certainly not transparent at all - did the little profile thing and noticed the b.day or d.day however we might look at it. 

Anyhow seems like you have it all in perspective.  Hitting your goals which I might add are incredibly adventurous to those of us petrified of heights.  Nepal sounds fantastic - A good friend of mine who is actually retired just returned from visiting the monuments of the Incas in Peru which brings me to ask if you have any notion of going to the Andes!! He's in his mid 80's so I think you have plenty of time to ponder that one.

Just looked on the internet and see indelibly Stamped on amazon.com selling for $24.49.  That might be a good route for you.

Hope you have a great one at Christmas as I am sure you will.

Great news about you friend travelling to Peru at 80 years old ! I have heard many great stories about the Andes and I would love to go, I might plan that one for a couple of years time. Undoubtedly I'll have take a good bit of travelling music to Nepal so I think I might do a supertramp compilation, those two tracks on indelibly stamped will set things up nicely. Do you know the tracks I mean ?

Your quite Right ! I lived for the grove and could'nt wait to get down there on saturday nights !  I came from Baldoyle,and three nights a week in summer it would take me 1 hour to walk home, everyone else would be heading down Brookwood avenue towards Artane and I'd be heading down past Raheny to reach the coast road, but enjoyed every minute of the walk, Saturday nights were my favourite as I would always be sure that all my friends were going to be down there, at the end of the night we'd decide whose house we were going to invade the next day for a jammin session on guitars.

So I'm really up for a reunion ! but sadly can't make this Christmas as I am off to Nepal for a few weeks trekking. I am however coming home for a week or so next Easter so I hope that there will be a tribute night then, But I will definately come to the next one after Christmas, and if your going I would love to hook up, I'm sure well a few drinks and laughs and maybe a few stories to tell ! Good to hear John got Married to the Girl of his dreams, (obviously he has you to thank for that). I knew Robbie better as I lived round the corner from him in Donaghmede. (it was later my Family moved to Baldoyle) I worked part time in H.Williams supermarket opposite the Bakery where he worked so I would sometimes pop in to see him for a quick chat, and a free doughnut if I could get it.

As far As the Supertramp thing goes, I was listenting their music from the age of 12, they were my first band, later obviously I got into genesis, L zep, Yes, N.Young, J.Mitchell, to name but a few.I was more of a Hippie than a Rocker, but certainly loved all the Rock anthems that Cecil played. Come on Rolo admit it ! everyone at least liked songs such as Dreamer, the Lodgical song, and Give a little bit !

It's coming back to me now,I remember giving Robbie fierce stick in the Sunday and Wednesday Groves 'cos he had to be up so early for a Five A.M. start in the bakery.Do you remember he went out with Carol Ann from Coolock for a while ?

You didn't knock around with the lads from Kinsealy by any chance ?I think there was a guy called Shane,one called Austin and also Derek who went on to play for Man.Utd. for a few years.They were also regulars of the time.

T'was great the way you recognised everyone in the Park on the Sunday afternoons and midweek evenings ( maybe you didn't venture that far ) but we all definitely did. There were frequent Poker Schools once it got too dark for football in the Summer Evenings.

Wouldn't head home from the Park 'til two in the morning.

Wouldn't allow my young fella to attempt that now though.

Anyway,keep up with the posts and we'll try to ensure that Crusty keeps the Reunions going into 2006.

Sorry to say Supertramp never did it for me, Zeppelin and the Doors from that era, with ,as you say ,a sprinkling of the timeless classics which always remind you of the good old days.

Listen to me, I'm like a pensioner ( not a word Lenny ).

Did'nt know the lads from Kinsealy, the lads I hung around with came from the top of Tonlegee Road or Raheny.impressive that someone from the grove went on to play for Man utd, I loved watching united play From the days of Frank stapleton and paul MCgrath. They reached their peak when they won the European cup. ( really a big shame about Keane). Find it hard to watch them these days now they've been overtaken by Chelsea

I do remeber Robbie coming down to the grove one Saturday night with a really attractive women by his side, (long brown hair,with matching eyes). We were sitting on the tables around the decks, Robbie does the introductions and She thinks I'm in Zero Zero, she's impressed and gets quite flirtatious, Robbie corrects the mistake and says I'm in a different band, She recoils in horror ! We all end up in tears of laughter. Maybe that was Carol Ann but can't remember her name.

 Robbie also intoduced me to someone wearing a black leather jacket (same as his), with long black curly hair, Was that you Rolo?.. If it was, we were indeed nodding acquaintances in those days. 

Do you remember Lark in the Park ? Moving hearts, and Stocktons Wing played one year, lots of Grove heads there, Most of us heavily armed with beer cans and cider bottles, just about made it home in one piece that Sunday evening

Russell, I seen your post the other day and thought "no" I don't know the songs off the top of my head, but my husband knew of Indelibly stamped.  Then while roaming around Media play decided to look into getting a copy - to no avail.  I actually looked around a few places but we are at a loss here in Columbus for good music shops I feel.  I might have to go the route I suggested to you but I am determined to get a copy now.  I did however pick up "Retrospectacle "The Supertramp Anthology" and one of the songs is from Indelibly Stamped "Your Poppa don't mind".  I've not had a good listen to it yet either. Can you see I'm a busy Mom (no comments from Rolo as I am sure he will have something to add to that in regard to cooking!!!)?

The band I was in were called 'second nature' (silly name I know), we won battle of the bands at St Paul's one year and thought to we'd make a go of it.After we all left school we went straight into a rehearsal studio. We gigged Dublin for about two years and had some really great fun, (we ocasionally made a bit of dosh). None of us had jobs and that was really our downfall, Just couldn't keep on paying for recording and rehearsal studios while living off the dole, We called  it a day in 1986. Ah well !

Still have a passion for the guitar though! I'm currently studying classical guitar and I'm hoping to teach !

Hi Teresa,

Don't give up on 'indelibly stamped' because I really think it's worth the wait. Not as well well grafted as the later albums, but most certainly there's some really nice songs on it.

I believe 'surely' appears on the retrospectical album, it lasts little over a minute, but in it you can hear Roger Hodgsons talent beggining to take shape. I think 'Hodgson and Davies' were very Similar to 'Lennon and Mcartney', both of them wrote their own songs, had different styles, Argued a bit, but depended on each other competitively.

Must go now as I am posting this from work, I'll have to pretend I'm doing something work related.

Actually sitting here working! I know how shocking that news will come to some.  Anyhow also listening to the Retrospectable album here.. it's great, one great song after the other and yes I did hear Surely and like it. 

I noticed you won the battle of the bands in Pauls - I do remember going to that one year.  What year did you go there?  I also noticed you saying you hung around with a few guys from Tonlegee Raod.  I remember a couple of guys from there alright that went to the grove and I believe were Pauls boys also.  Just thinking if you left around 83/84 you would know some of same people I do.

We did battle of the bands in 83/84, My mates were'nt from St pauls, we all came from different schools but meet up at weekends. From Tonlegee road I hung around with Corban and Bernard Kelly, and Allan Kinsella. they lived up near top of tonlegee road where it bends and meets Malahide Road. Further Down the road ( Killbarrack end) I hung around a guy called Paul Martin. Any of those names ring a bell ??? 

I've gotta go down the road and work in a designer sample sale! 5 days of thousands of shoppers fighting for bargains!!
