The weekend can be rather quiet dondon, it can be hit and miss but during the week is normally good.  Lately its been a bit slow but that's because Rolo and the gang have been out golfing when they are supposed to be working! That right lads

Welcome Gerry, (DONDON)

Don't listen to these eejits. The reason it's slow on weekends is because most ppl log on from work...LOL

Anyways, to me The OLD Grovers went to Mnt Prospect. but most on here went to St. Pauls Grove.

Important notice: There is a "Private Room" here that you can't get in to until you reach a certain amount of posts. When I signed up it was 100 but I think the powers that be might have raised that.

That's where all the fun is so get your posts up by posting in all the threads like "Rock ABC"...."Song Title Game" etc.

Congratulations on getting past ROLO's screening out process...hee hee

Hi All,

since I joined the site a few vague memories have come back.

Can anyone remember the entrance fee into(old Grove)I think it was a few shillings or 30p new money.

Can anyone recall on how to join.what was the procedure

I think the first time I went to the Grove I had to be  invited by a friend and sign a book and a fill out an application  till my card was issued. It was pink with white threads as a sort of reinforcment so it would tear easily

Was there a person dealing with appications.I do remember checking to see if my Card was issued and did it come in the post or was it there for collection can't be sure

Of course it was a prize posession and like gold dust.

Can anyone remember other things on how to join and was there a membership fee.Was there a temp card for new members ????

If you weren't from Clontarf ya better have known someone to get past the door...LOL

Don't remember how much it cost to get in.
The procedure was TO BEG and BEG. And usually if the bouncers said NO they meant NO.

I do know it took a while of trying to finally make it. Pogue finally got us in so I'll let him tell the story.

My friends dad brought us down so we were taken straight into the back and signed up straight away for a membership.  No messin just bring your Da down and the bouncers never said a word to us.  Up there for thinking and down there for dancing

What Brendan fella says has a certain truth about it.I lived in  St Annes.I just said Raheny as a safe bet and that I went to Pauls and played soccer for Home Farm.

I do remember they would often question you and take your card study it, ask you your Name etc.But after a while they got to recognise you.

They were mostly Cops moonlighting for a few dollars more.

But when it moved to St Pauls they seemed to be a bit more agressive .I saw one assault a lad after it finished outside the Main gate. I knew the Bouncer as he lived on The Howth road around the corner from me

Did any one use the excuse of, I want to get a message to someone  ie Sister, Brother, and tell them I will be only a minute and hope they would forget about you.Any good bunk in stories

Never went to the Pauls grove but I remember in Mt Prospect

2/- in to Grove.

Membership applications were delt with by Declan Thigh the Belgrove football club secretary

You had to know a member and get in 4-6 times before you could apply

My number was 1482. Cecil was going to see if the Thigh family still had the books as Declan has sadly passed away. It would be great if they had.

I forget the name of ther bouncer in chief but he was a gaurd from St Annes. It's on the site somewhere as I asked this question before

7-up or orange was 6d and there was a slight charge for the cloakroom so everyone shagged  their coats on the floor or the stage

 Thank you Aries,

Yes I remember the coats in a heap on the Floor and people seemed to congregate in the same area each time. It's over 30 years ago and some memories of the great times are coming back.I went to the Pauls Grove and somehow it wasn't the same, maybe it was the fact that I went to to Pauls and it felt like a school activity.

You still remember your number It would be great if some sort of archive was kept.

I must read the treads from other Grovers

I know the was a Garda called Noonan who was very much involved inthe running of it .

Again many thanks for your reply

Noonan.. thats it Gerry. Mr Noonan and he sometimes had his daughter doing the coats.

Barry also fom St Annes sold the drinks etc.

We hung around at the stage end ( The Killester shower ) and never seemed to mind that there were not a lot of girls joining our head bagging circle. They would come and go in and out of the circle but you had to try and get one to walk home at the end of the night so the last half hour seemed frantic

Would you believe that I fancied his Daughter Clodagh. But noting ever materialised.

I hung out initally with a group of bikers, allthough not a biker myself. But I met a Girl in the group and we went out together. So I must have looked odd among the group with short hair(roaring red)and trying to air guitar. They allowed me to be in the group because of Fionnula. I contemplated in getting a bike. But a honda 50 was all I could get, a 8th hand one at that.I believe the chain on it is somewhere in St Annes park.I got a pain in the ass from it constantly coming off.So I left it there one evening

Hiya Stevie - long time no see!

Gerry - I was a St Pauls lad, finished up there in 1980.  I think I started going to the Grove in 1979 (ish) so.  When I first went, the guys had red memberships and the girls had green ones.  After a few years of those, they started switching them over to the plastic ones with the pictures on (like that one up in the top corner of the web-page).

Brunswick (Mel).

Went to the inner city santum - O'Connell's 1968-73. A pupil was expelled for just having a little red book with him (the thoughts of Mao). Seems daft now when you think what the brothers were up to.

Gary and 5 others were sent home to get their hair cut. There is a picture of it somewhere on the site. It made the front page of the Evening Press (I think)

Same in David's when I was in 5th year.

Was two of us in the school with really long hair, meself and Pikey.

The Principal,Br. Crowe went on a campaign to sort us out but Pikey just refused ( for a while until he was threatened with expulsion ) and my Mam called up to the school and told Br. Crowe to leave me alone saying that I was a decent kid and if the worst thing I was ever to do was to have the long hair then let me off.

Poor Br. Crowe didn't know where to look but in fairness he left me alone after that .

Aren't Mammies great.
