Did anyone hear Tony Fenton on Today FM today, where he interviewed Carly Simon, and amongst other things, asked her who was You're so Vain' about.

She didn't give much away, but kept insisting 'the answer is there right in front of you'

She denied it was about David Geffen, and other than that kept it shush.

She did say that the person came into her party she had at her house in 1972 and watched himslef in the mirror as he entered, throwing his (apricot?) scarf around himslef. Carly said to her friend 'he thinks he's walking onto a yacht'.

Other than saying 'it's right there for you to see',she didn't reveal the subjects identity.

Myself,I think it's about Mike Coffey. I don't know who that is,but,as she says herself,' I had some dreams there were clouds in Mike Coffey...'

I always subscribed to the theory it was about Mick Jagger - era, hat and scarf all fit

Mick is on the record as well which would add to " it's right there on front of you" remark.

There are only two reasons to compassionately do away with old people:
They either become very ill or Rolf Harris.

Could also be Kris Kristofferson she was associated with him as well?!

Lots of conjecture on this, she was married to James Taylor for 1 month when the song was written, Mick Jaggar sang it with her, Warren Beatty's mom was a drama teacher from Nova Scotia & he liked horse racing...he was rumoured to be also involved with Bianca Jagger..anyone's guess?.Mine is that she wrote it to include ALL the vain men she had had in her life, then refused to say who because her chorus line of "you probably think this song is about you" would drive them all mad trying to figure out and then realizing they've been duped by falling into her trap of being so vain as to reach THAT conclusion!!

Here's an early .early Grove song by Long John Baldry. A local Irish group (
whose name I can't remember) had a hit with it, long before any Irish band
broke the English charts...I think it made it to about #49. Cecil might have
only played this version in the Flamingo.

This would have been Cecil's version

JOHN WILLIAM BALDRY - January 12, 1941 - July 21, 2005 - Long John Baldry passed away at the Vancouver General Hospital, July 21/05 at 10:30pm after fighting a severe chest infection. He was surrounded by friends and loved ones and is now at peace. John Baldry will be remembered by his music and the love he generously gave to all those who came in contact with him. Our world is a lesser place without him, for John was a person that enhanced this world with his enormous presence and talent. Picture a 6ft, 7' English dandy who could bawl the blues like LeadBelly. That was Long John Baldry, a legendary figure in the early British blues scene - born in East London in January, 1941, died in Vancouver in July, 2005, as a Canadian citizen, a beloved mentor and performer, and one of the music world's great eccentrics. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20071020.BKBALD20/TPStory/?query=long+john+baldry+book+review - read full review
