Ah Blondie a lot of pubs were the same.

When i lived in Donnycarney there was a pub near me call "The Ramble Inn", still there I think.

At night the men and women would go there as a couple. When they got there the men went one way and the women another.

True as God.

At closing time they'd meet up again and the rows that would break out was gas. There'd be killings on the way home.

Fagan's in Drumcondra was one of the last men only pubs in Dublin.

Anyone remember growing up in the 60's-70's where nearly every house had a fire lit.

In those days, pre smokeless fuel, the air used to be thick with smoke at this time of year with the frosty nights and no wind.

And then at Haloween it got even worse with bonfires and fireworks.

In the summer people would burn their grass cuttings etc. in the back garden and the Ma's would be going crazy because the washing was getting destroyed on the lines.

How things have changed.

I was out walking yesterday evening and this thought ocurred to me as the air I was inhaling was so clean.

I remember it well.  Going out and walking in the "Smog"... Putting water on the footpath to make a slide on the cold winter nights.  Great fun.  I remember walking home from Dollymount when I was much much younger!! and the fog following us up through the park and all the way home.  Believe it or not I miss that part of home.  People lighting fires! well we have a guy behind us that does it all the time and I just have to make sure my windows are closed .  Do you remember licking the bowl after your Mother made the Christmas cake and the puddings... yum.

Yeah, my Ma would make her Christmas cakes ages before Christmas and put them under the stairs in a cupboard.

You'd be dying for Christmas because nobody makes cakes like she did.

And she always kept some and sometimes during the year she'd take out a Christmas cake and give you a slice as a treat. Heaven !!

I remember when I was young my Da worked shift at the airport so my Ma would be at home.

When she had all the housework done she'd sit at the table in the living room and get out her cards.

She used to play this game that fascinated me when I was a kid. Cards all over the table in neat rows and colours.

I used sit and watch her and it transpires this game was "patience" or "solitaire".

Later she taught me this game and now we have in on our PC's and I often play it.

When I think back I don't know how she ever got time to relax at all.

Bless her soul.

Did everyone get to stir the mixture and make a wish?

When the cake was in the oven, nobody was allowed in the kitchen cos the cooker would shake and the cake might flop!

Steaming the puddings too took ages, even when my Mum used the pressure cooker!

One year my Da locked the (dead) turkey in the front room. One of us must've opened the door, cos that night the cat ran out very full, and the turkey was considerably smaller!

My uncle used to bring the turkey up from Mullinavat - that was his gift to my Dad every year! They were twins.  It was a Mother of a thing and Dad would hang it - remember the big red head on it....

Do you remember pulling the crackers! Was able to get them over here last year.  Back then we used to put Balloons on our Christmas tree.  Remember the decorations back then also!!! wild.  Dad used to light the Christmas pudding at the table on Christmas day!

One year we got lovely imitation snow for the tree.  It looked brilliant, the real deal.  But no one could sit near the tree without looking like they bad been invested with fleas they would be scratching so much.  Turned out the "snow" was made from fibre glass, really good for the skin!

Jaysis, now you're dredging up some memories. Haven't been in there in at least three days !

In 1972 - 1974 when i was going to the Grove on the motorbikes we'd meet in the Barony, back of Coles (now Smyths) in Fairview or the Beachcomber in Killester.

You were not allowed into Harry Byrnes. It was a men only pub and no young people would be served there, especially long haired bikers

I did get to go there in the early 80's.

Haven't been there in a while.

Harry Byrne himself was one of the most unpredictable moody old codgers that ever owned a bar.  He made up the rules as he went along.  Hated weddings.  If any one dropped in for a quick one from a wedding in the hotel around the corner, invariably he refused to serve them.  Served me two pints one night and then refused me a third telling me I was underage!  Anyone got Harry stories?

I remember my mam getting a few bottles of Poteen from a friend of hers and putting it in the christmas cakes. She used to make about 12 cakes and puddings too for our friends and family. Most of them are dead now so she just makes her own!!

Who mentioned the Barony? Haven't been there for years. Went there with friends on that fateful night of the penalty shootout!!! Bloody brilliant.

Didn't like the Beachcomber. Even tho' it was done up I still remember my nana drinking there, holding court like the queen.

I feel so old!!!!!

The Barony, that brings back one particular memory.  A load of us went down there one Christmas Eve night and despite already serving me about 3 pints, one of the barmen then wouldnt serve me, saying I was too young (I was 21 but didnt look my age).  My mates told me not to worry and that they would get the drink in but the barman then wouldnt serve any of them "until I left" .

I was hopping mad and immediately went outside in Fairview to get a taxi back up to Artane to get some ID (I hadnt really got any though) - I ended up grabbing a bundle of 21st birthday cards and hopped back in a taxi down to Fairview.  When I approached the bar, expecting a confrontation, I explained the situation to a (different) barman.  He then said "that was just the other fella (who's now off duty), I've no problem serving you"...

Kinda ruined what was, until that point, a nice Christmas Eve night.

I'm amazed you didn't get served. Anytime I was in at least half the pub was underage!!

Bet that barman didn't last too long. Profits would've gone down too much. Hope you had a good christmas tho'.

As for Harry Byrne being a grouchy codger. My dad, on occasion, would drink there. He said he never saw so many people being barred just cos he was in a bad mood!!

Also remember the fog in St. Anne's "following" you. Forgot about that. So scary walking home from DH thru the park. We usually ran.

Years ago there was a barman in Kehoes in South Anne Street was like that. you could be standing at the bar and if he was busy suddenly you would find yourself barred yet if you waited a five minutes he would then serve you

Sometimes my dad would take us to Madigans in Kilbarrack Shopping Centre. My mam would do the shopping and we'd wait in the pub. Loved going from the brightly lit area into the dark pub. Seemed so grown up.

He'd get us a "dressed orange" with sugar around the rims. Cos he knew the manager well I'd get extra cherries and everything.

The first bacardi my dad bought me there he put sugar around the rim too!!!!
