Cool, another good night I'm sure. Gives me a full weekend to recover from Oxegen.....
What's the story on the TBMC grove nights? Are they dead and buried for good??? What about Isaacs.....?

Well the good news on that front is that The Grove
Tribute Nights will once again return to The Isaac
Butt, where they first started. The TBMC was just a
temporary measure. The new venue in the Isaac Butt
will be complete within the month, it's starting to
shape up nicely (eventually, it's been closed for 1
year and 2 weeks now). So keep your eyes on the
site for further details...

I'm just wondering what planet I've been on not to know this website existed! Its so great!! The Grove years were some of the best years of my life and its just so great to read all the shared memories so many of us lucky northsiders have in common. I absolutely loved the Grove, it was the Mecca of all teenagers, the place where all the cool kids gathered and tried to look even cooler. My older brother started going before me and I remember seeing him crawl home in the early hours bleary eyed and completely shattered after a night at the Grove. It became my adolescent ambition to gain access to this haven of all things cool and I couldn't believe my luck when I got my priced Grove membership thanks to a very dodgy fake id that added 2 years to my 14. Oh the knacker drinking, The Neptune, The Cock Tavern in Howth, standing in the Q to get in to the Grove trying not to fall on your face before you got past the bouncers. The slow sets, the snogs, the head banging, the dope fumes, Cecil the man, The Doors, Stairway to Heaven and Freebird.....sitting on the floor swaying to Bob Dylan, your long hair covering your face...the grandfather shirts and tassled skirts from Asha in Liffey St. or the Dandelion....the passing joint...your stomach contents in the compound...then the long walk home to Baldoyle stopping off at the chipper in Raheny...whole gangs of us together reliving the moments, laughing, together....it was the best of times...and the thing was we were safe on those long walks home, noone was left alone, noone was ever attacked or hurt...we all looked out for eachother and it was like that in the Grove too, there was always someone to hold your hair back when you blew chunks and to mind you all night after half a bottle of pernod. And here we are today.....adults, parents....with great memories of a very special time...

Thanks for the website and the club, the best idea. I'm sorry I missed the summer reunion but I'll definitely be at the next one.

oh and if Paddy Donnelly is out there I'd love to contact him.

the best of times

To chezdee

I have just read your message and it just brought back lots of memories.Embarrassed

We went in the early's 80's and there was a large gang of us and some of us are still great friends. Its is true notting ever happen to any of us .We are all from ST.Annes and we would walk through the park every week (i wouldn't dream of walking through there now)and we all looked out for each other We would just live for the Grove and when started going on a Sunday we thought we were the coolist. There was only one Saturday night that the Grove was called off and that was because of the Stardust and we all went down the Park and had our on Grove

Been to all the reunion's and they have been great.

Clap

The million dollar question! Well, it's very nearly finished now. It should be totally finished by the 21st of August or there abouts. It looks great, we've expanded to the left of the original building, both upstairs and down. The old venue has remained pretty much untouched, but the rest has been totally renovated. We spent over 200,000 euro on sound and lighting, it'll be the best venue around for it's size. So we're really excited about it now. The new operators want us run the Grove Tribute nights there again, so that will probably happen starting in September. But these will be totally seperate from the Reunions that will be happening in The Shieling Hotel. The Tribute nights are just DJ Andy, literally paying tribute to The Grove. But the Reunions are with DJ Cecil too. So we're keeping them seperate. The tribute nights are for the Grove addicts who "Just Can't Get Enough"... There'll also be other club nights happening at Isaac's that we're also excited about, ne in particular sounds like it's going to change the face of Dublin nightlife for good - and it's about time too...

I'm surprised tonight's Grove Reunion hasn't been advertised on this website.

Am also surprised how some punters have separate batches of 6 and 4  tickets for sale today and a few days ago.

Thought there would have been a restriction on the number you could buy seeing at it's a limited capacity.
May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

Pat,there was nothing mentioned re: restrictions on tickets for any reunion... there was a time I'd be looking for 6+ tickets, and was never a problem.

I know Sean but tickets were reasonably easy to come by before.

This had limited availability because it was advertised late and open to members of the tennis club first.

Look at all the genuine Grovers we know who had difficulty getting tickets.

That's my point.

Pat,sadly this will mean that a number of tickets will go to waste,so there won't be a full house tonight, which is a shame.

Pat, 1. the weather is fine,a bit chilly, but standard for this time of the year
2. they would know if there was a Christmas party prior to tickets for reunion going on sale...
3. idiots is probably the correct answer,I can understand that 1 or 2 people might not make it due to unforeseen circumstances, but there seems to be @ 20 tickets not been used now,and it's very unlikely they will all sell so close to the event.

The 2023 reunion is over now, and we wait for a report on how it went.

I am thinking that some of the younger attendees might not know they were partying in a Rock and Roll shrine. The “Tennis Club” or “Oulton” is where, around 1969, Phil Lynnott, as the lead singer of Skid Row practiced. Without any admission charge you could just mosey into the place on weeknights, usually half empty except for us losers and a bunch of Raheny guys…seldom any girls to speak of. Understandable, as Phil was brutal back then and couldn’t sing a lick, even worse on the base, 10 minute drum solos, not a soul on the dance floor.  The only enjoyable part was when they played a few records during their breaks. Ahh, sure we didn’t appreciate we were on hallowed ground or what we were witnessing. HAH!

...during the same period Skid Row was the house band at "The Go Go" on Abbey Street. They sucked there too but had a loyal following. Hard to get into without a membership card, or if you didn't look like you stepped off Carnaby Street.

...the band was so terrible that I blame Phil and them as my number 1 reason for leaving Ireland  Wink

.
