Cecil was a great DJ at The Grove, But how easy he had it, Playing the same songs in the same order weekin weekout. All who went had a membership card. We went every sat. night, but had no orther option around. Come on lads! Most People could DJ at a school disco? Yes? No? Lets hear Ya!

If it was so easy then why did other DJs not do it? There were other options when I went to the Grove - I could have gone to the cricket, town, etc. However, there simply wasn't anywhere else that had the same atmosphere and music.

Easy! never, he played songs but not always the same week in week out! We had plenty of options when we went but the grove was it! No not everyone could DJ at a school disco not the way Cecil did it and if so why is there so much talk about the grove and no other place really since!!!!
It was a special place and there is absolutely no doubt about that!!!!!
ps:not everyone had a membership! for some they were very hard to come by...

Thats just not true, Stardust. There were certain perennial favourites that were regularly played but Cecil always played different tunes on different weeks. One of the great things about Cecil though was that he was so approachable - we used to sit up by his decks on a Saturday or Sunday night, flicking through the singles and suggesting that this or that song be played. He almost always played the songs we requested. How he put up with us pestering him constantly I'll never know, but the man is an absolute legend in my opinion!!

Stardust
Yeah I agree most people could stand up and play music at a school disco. But as Cecil has stated he has never classed himself as a DJ but as a "guy who played music". Yes Cecil played same songs most weeks but he didn't play the songs in the same order he would mix and match the songs that he played. Yes there was the regulars. It is easy for someone to stand up and do DJ at schools disco. Even I have done Djing in pubs etc. People went to theh Grove for the music and many of the radio personalities were influances by the music in the Grove ie Marty Whelan and Ray McKeown Phantom FM to name just two
Yes we all went every Saturday or Sunday or Wednesday but it wasn't because there was no other options around. In fact there was many options for people to go 1. The Cricket Club Clontarf 2. Oasis in Marino, 3. St Brendans in the old Church in Coolock Village 4.St Davids school Disco
Another thing thats very easy to do is A gobsh*te like you coming on to a website and trying to stir controversary with some of your comments and posts and I really don't know why you have even joined this site. Also in regards to your name I take offense at and find it very disrespectful and I doubt it is in referernce to the new movie thats out.
Stardust if you are a genuine user just cop on with your comments and posts if you are here just to cause trouble thats fine too because that can be sorted as well... The Jury is still out on you

I don't normally get involved in disputes like this but I have to comment here. I am trying to be as polite as possible here as I am angered by any comments that in any way diminish Cecil. I was lucky enough to go to The Grove and you can read my tribute to Cecil on the web. I know Cecil outside the Grove and that man is a true rock and roll legend and as modest and decent a man you could ever meet. I don't think RTE would have wasted their time entertaining the Grove documentary if there was not a classic story to be told about the legendary disco and DJ. I did DJ myself for a while in the 70's and I can tell you I was knacked after every gig but Cecil played three nights a week and he never tired of entertaining us. So please Stardust have some respect for The Man. Pat

Well maybe you should change your tone with your post. So far a lot of your post seem to be offensive i.e. in the soccer section. Your post are coming accross as if you are trying to rile people up on the site.... If you are a new user you are not doing yourself any favours.

I Will have to report this Post for these reasons:
Personal name calling, sl*gging off choice of user name and Bullying.
