Well being a bloke and going to the Grove only with blokes it was essential that you ended up with a good looking girl during the slow sets. If she turned out to be a bit rough then you were guaranteed to get slaughtered by your friends over it. And if you ended up with no one that was even worse. It was almost like having the plague. Watching all your mates shifting chicks while your sitting on the ice cold plastic chairs wondering where your life went so terribly wrong.

Was this the same for the girlies out there?

I don't think it was so bad for us....for starters, we didn't have to do the asking. We could always go for a smoke or to the loo thereby removing ourselves from the possibility of even being asked, and we had the option to say no......

So if your friends were all going with someone and you didn't want to be a wallflower you just did a Houdini

I'd just say to meself, 'ah sod it' and go and browse through Cecil's singles collection.  Got awfully familiar with them after a while...

I seem to recall that there was a group of lads and lassies hung out together so you weren't always left on ones own. But you had to be careful not to get in the way of young lust at times!

I agree with Esthalon think it was much easier for us girls.

My memory is lads outnumbering girls 2 to 1 anyway so better odds for us

I can remember running to the door when the slow sets came on just in case you got asked to dance by someone you didn't want to dance with...... And then hanging around near the guys that you were "praying" would ask you to dance.....sometimes we got lucky, but most times

Starter Chat Up lines during Slow Sets....

What were the most popular or the most idiotic I wonder????

Had to have been.....

(A) " Do you come here often ? ".

Oh dear....that was quite sad AND definitely muttered the most.....

followed by ( if they couldn´t guess by your clothes )...

(B) " What are ye into ? "....

then the dreaded.....( if the guy was a creature, cyclops etc )

(C) " want to head outside ? ".......

of course if he was a "bang" then you were made up as you were pulled by the hand, hopefully through a gang of female pals looking on with that " lucky cow " glance and you trying to appear to being dragged against your will !!!

....to a vacant space in the infamous Compound....

Must be better one liners.....

Can´t think of them right now....possibly due to the fact my head is filled with kids homework, laundry and dogs hassling to head out on their constitutional....

B. Noches,

Mins

I think it was definitely more difficult being the boy on these occassions. I mean, we were the ones supposed to do the asking, we had to gather the balls up to approach you, single you out in front of all your friends and then inevitably face rejection. It took me a while to remember to check my self-respect in at the cloakroom with my jacket at the start of the night and collect it at 1am, in order to have any kind of success during the slow sets... But then I discovered Autumn Gold, Fosters, Budweiser... This changed things dramatically - who cares if she says no, just move on and ask the next one - the chances were, you're bound to come across somebody else who's just looking for a bit of a mooch and doesn't mind being groped for the rest of the evening.

But then there were the days when the blue moons were shining and a girl would approach you - "Will you dance with me mate?". This was music to my ears. You could just sit back and let her worry about coming up with all the cheesy one-liners! Those were the days...

I'm not even supposed to be here today!

Crusty, from what I can recall, you never had that much of a problem with getting attention or dances from girls!!!!!!

What doesn't kill you, definitely makes you stronger!!!!

We should all tell our kids the do's and don't of asking someone to dance.....so they don't have to go through the same embarrassing moments that we went through.
