Decided to open this as a new Thread.

Photos welcome ( ATTN: Stoner and Robbie 63 ).

Who remembers when they SERIOUSLY either starting growing or styling their hair particularly during the Grove Years.

What was the MAIN motivation ?? - the music, the trends, the friends, Smash Hits, TOTP, Old Grey Whistle Test, wanting to piddle their parents off or whatever.

Tick where appropriate.

Memories and stories on hair cutting, spiking, streaking, henna, perms, moose, curling tongs, twirly brushes, rakes, hair spray, hair gel, bandanas,...etc...etc..

Some of this has been covered before but it deserves
it`s own special place here in the Topics.

My hair story started with growing out a pageboy, bowl haircut from my Confirmation days.

It grew out and then in, semi mullet until I decided around Inter Cert year that my Dad needed sorting and I got it spiked and jammed 5 earrings into one earlobe.

I remember heading over to Kilbarrack Shopping Centre, those were the days of the itchy dry cuts, hair stuck to collar kind.

I showed the stylist a picture I had pulled from Smash Hits. She refused to do it at first cos she permed my Mums hair and knew what my Mum would think then she relented. Got into heaps of trouble and my Dad used to stare me out of it so much at dinner that I resorted to taking my plate and myself elsewhere.

Then I headed to the Grove, dropped the Big Country look and started to GROW the hair. I was already mad into AC/DC, Santana etc and sussed fairly early on that the " bangs" were indeed all of the long haired breed and I knew that was where I was meant to go; that was where I belonged.

The gruaig went through its awful growing out phase, almost mullet like yet again and I used to back comb it and tie a Indian scarf under my fringe !!!.
Odd days I used to plait either side and wear small plaits down the side of my face caught at the end with beads.

Henna was added and it started to look like something. One side purple, one side burgandy ( brought more evil looks from the Dad ).

Perming came in in a big way then and off I went to try that out. Perms were horrible when done initially, all tight and Granny Basher like, then when they grew out a bit, looked great and peformed well at the Grove.

I spent the majority of my time hiding behind my fringe and making sure it was very long. Someone had told me I had a high forehead so that was that..took me years to grow out a fringe and tie it back and get over it.

For me the hair was everything as far as I was concerned and the clothes secondary.

Horror Stories, Happy Stories..

Get going

I tried and tried to grow my hair long. It ended more of a mullet. I had a "kink" in my hair it just didn't grow any longer than my collar and start curling up Grrrr!!!!
I wanted it like Bono hair during the War and UnForgettable Fire era.. I knew I couldn't get it to grow like his Joshua Tree hairstyle... All I say thank God for POP and Popmart tour I have the same hairstyle almost... Shaven well mine was bald his was shaven

My hair was short when I first went to the Grove but after seeing all the other lads there with long hair (and realising that you couldnt really headbang without it), I started to grow mine.  At one point, I made a fatal mistake and got it cut to around shoulder length with a dodgy fringe and I never lived it down.  Started re-growing it after that.  Have always liked having long hair and it was incredibly traumatic for me when I noticed in the 1990s that it was thinning.  Its still long though!

I suppose I had a pretty normal but longish hairstyle at school that wouldn't upset the Marist Fathers at Chanel. I remember some 6th years being made an example of, by having ribbons tied in their hair by the priests. They rang up the Herald and got their pics on the front page!!

so I'd be one of those who had longer hair after the Grove years -

a couple of years after school I grew the beard , used a bit of henna, and got the Peter Marks Perm!  I only got the one perm as the motorbike lids would've flattened them!
will try to dig out some pics...

Ah Mel, that's a priceless admission. What's worse is that I remember that and yeah, it was well dodgy .

Good lord, my hair. Bane of my life.

Would love to have it grow long. Really long (Steve Harris from Iron Maiden type long). Why? Because I like that look. And I'd just like to have it grow that long, and put a tick in that box.

But, it grows big, really big. I was getting a cut a few years back and the young fella doing my hair was breathing deeply just behind me. I was getting a touch worried, but in fairness he was just driven mad. "Your hair just grows all over the place" he announced. "Tell me about it" says I.

Pre Grove, it was blow dry and brush back off forehead - up up and away.

Over the years I've tried a couple of times to grow it - Attempt 1 ended with Paul's sending home a note. Got through Saturday and thought I had another week to grow it. Hair wasn't near as curly back then for some reason - about collar length. auld lad grabbed a handful of it in his fist and cut - looked like Jaws had taken a bite outa it. Went to a barber for a rescue mission soon after that.

I used to get a number one all over, leave it three or four months until it was all over the shop and then repeat the process for a few years.

Attempt two ended when Mrs Whipper and whipper's ma ganged up and told me I'd ruin my brother's wedding for everyone if I didn't cut my hair. That was just over two years ago. Can't stand up to both women in my life - I'm brave but not stupid.

Attempt three is still in progress, but seems to just curl up on itself rather than grow down.

This morning my wife looked at me and said, "Did you hear that on the news? Well groomed men earn on average 6% more than others". Wonder why she said that?

 Wanna Pet My Mullet Stoner,

You have nothing to worry about - think Samson (bible) he had a fine head of hair as well.    Although it did get him into trouble !!!!

Blondie,

I remember the Escape the Ape well. If memory serves I would have required a second mortgage to cover the time they'd spend on me

think I gave some members in Harry's a glance at one shoulder to demonstrate the appropriateness of the avatar. There was some retching, coats grabbed and off they dashed
